A Segunda Crise Global da Democracia Representativa. Uma Perspectiva Europeia

Abstract:
The election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States of America is not a single and isolated political event. On the contrary, it should be understood as part of a deeper and wider historical process of growing erosion of the representative democracy constitutional software, similar to what happened after the Great Depression, initiated in 1929, and with strong connections with the fragmentation symptoms that pervade through the long lasting and dangerous European Union crisis. Economic and finance globalization brought about a clear collision route between market economy, political institutions and social discourses aiming legitimacy for public policies in polities shaped by decades of continuous welfare culture. This paper aims to tackle the global dimensions of the contemporary political unrest, from the perspective of the promises that need to be once more uncovered within the representative democracy software. Democracy, republicanism and federalism, however immersed in somber times, contain still the sound and basic grammar to manifest the aspirations of the human conditions towards peace and social justice.
